UPDATE: Hospital-Based EMS? Statement from TVHC Board of Trustees
Study shows that TVHC is vital to the local economy
A recent study estimates that Teton Valley Health Care benefited the local economy to the tune of $11M. The report was prepared by Public Research & Marketing, an independent consulting firm located in Boise.
The report bases its conclusions on both direct and induced factors. A direct factor would include annual payroll and direct local spending. In the case of TVHC, wages and salaries exceeded $4 million and direct purchases from local businesses were approximately $710,000. A multiplier of 0.9750 is then added, reflecting additional impacts on family spending, schools, and other local business. (This multiplier is called a RIMS II hospital multiplier that has been accepted nationally as a conservative method to estimate actual economic impact.)
Quotes from the study clearly state the advantage of having a healthy community hospital:
“Any dollar increase of hospital spending creates 57.7 cents in the community. Conversely, if the hospital reduces expenditures, the same amount is withdrawn from the community.”
“The amount of levy tax support provided by the community is much lower than the amount contributed by the existence of the hospital ($1,000,000 [tax levy] versus $11,000,000+).”
The reports summary figure of $11,034,975 reflects the approximate economic value of our organization locally. In terms of lives saved and improved individual health outcomes, TVHC’s return on community investment has been significant.
